The Crossroads of Divorce & Narcissism

August 6, 2024
Gasper & Romanow Legal, PLLC

Narcissists often complicate the divorce process with manipulative behavior and a need to control the situation, which is generally impossible. Anyone can struggle with this challenge, but it is essential to understand what narcissism is and how divorcing a narcissist looks can help you prepare for what’s ahead. Recognizing certain behaviors and knowing what to expect during the divorce process is empowering. Being prepared enables you to protect yourself and reach a fair outcome you and your family deserve. It’s essential to be aware of the strategies narcissists use so you can stay one step ahead. Knowledge and preparation are your best defenses.

What Narcissism Is

Narcissism is a personality disorder, and people who have it possess an inflated sense of self-importance. They have a deep-rooted need for admiration. Narcissists often lack empathy and develop complex relationships with those around them. Ironically, they can be charming and confident, but their behavior can also be harmful. Narcissists may manipulate, lie, and hurt others to get what they want. They often feel entitled to special treatment and tend to exaggerate their achievements and talents, needing constant validation.

This behavior usually stems from their insecurities, making them very sensitive to criticism. Understanding these traits is essential when dealing with a narcissist, especially during a divorce. Narcissists also have a constant need for attention and admiration, which can lead to problematic behaviors in relationships. Their inability to recognize or care about the feelings of others can make them particularly challenging to deal with in a divorce.

What Divorcing A Narcissist Looks Like

Divorcing a narcissist can be a long and exhausting process. Narcissists often use manipulation to maintain control over their spouses. They may use gaslighting to make you doubt your reality or try to turn others against you. They blame you for everything and refuse to take responsibility for their actions. During a divorce, a narcissist may use children as pawns, attempting to manipulate custody arrangements to their advantage. They might also hide assets or lie about finances.

Their goal is to win at all costs. One of the most frightening components is that they may ignore their children’s well-being. They can be relentless in pursuing what they believe they deserve. Narcissists usually prolong the legal process with delaying tactics, such as filing frivolous motions or refusing to negotiate. They might also attempt to smear your reputation by spreading false accusations or demeaning comments to undermine your confidence. They often create unnecessary conflict to wear you down and gain an advantage. Documenting everything and staying focused on your goals is crucial despite their attempts to derail the process.

What You Can Do When Confronted By A Narcissist

When you divorce a narcissist, maintaining your composure and focusing on self-care is vital. Keep communication limited to necessary topics, preferably through written means like email to create a record—document all interactions, including any manipulative or abusive behavior, which can be crucial evidence in court. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your friends and family. Meeting with a therapist will give you access to someone who can articulate what is happening and how to respond. Prioritize your well-being by engaging in stress-relieving activities and ensuring a solid support network. Working with an experienced attorney who understands high-conflict divorces is essential to protect your interests and navigate the complexities of the legal process.
